Daybreakers: The Underrated Vampire Movie That Gave the Late Sam Neill One Of His Best Villain Roles

The whole world mourned when actor Sam Neill died on July 13th, 2026, at 78 years old from pneumonia. Even though he had been battling a rare blood cancer for years, his death felt sudden and unexpected – even for his family, especially since it came just after Neill announced that he was cancer-free. While Daybreakers (69% on Rotten Tomatoes) wasn’t his most popular role (that probably goes to Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park), the film continued to show off his acting chops and his ability to play a villain really well (as we saw again later in MindGamers and Peaky Blinders – although none of them compares to his role in Omen III: The Final Conflict). It’s taken this long for fans to realize just how cool he was as the film’s main vampire villain, Charles Bromley, a ruthless CEO who wants to use a blood substitute to become the richest man alive.

While Daybreakers saw only moderate success, that didn’t deter the film’s star, Ethan Hawke, from envisioning a sequel to the sci-fi horror classic. And fans are totally on board.

What Makes Daybreakers Stand Out From Other Vampire Movies

Vampire movies are one of the cornerstones of movie history. Since Murnau redefined horror in movies with 1922’s Nosferatu, the creatures of the night have transformed themselves, becoming an integral part of each new generation. Still, for how popular they are in literature, vampire flicks have yet to become as prominent as superhero films have.

That said, every few years a new vampire flick manages to break away from the conventions of the genre, delivering a unique experience that manages to make the audience fall in love with the bloodsucking creatures all over again.

Ethan Hawke’s 2009 sleeper hit, Daybreakers (written and directed by the Spierig Brothers), is just that. A futuristic dystopia that has the vampires as the leading species on planet Earth, the movie became a modest box-office success, not to mention a cult classic among vampire fans the world over.

In the same vein as Brad Pitt’s World War Z, much of the action in Daybreakers revolves around a group of vampires who aim to find a cure for the vampirism that’s brought society to the edge of collapse. Disappointingly, the movie ends before we see if society will ever return to normal.

For those who don’t remember, Neill played the film’s villain as a very relatable character. Despite being money-hungry, we can sympathize with his reasons for becoming a vampire (he was dying of cancer) and the losses he has had to face to get to where he is. He isn’t interested in a cure. He sees the world’s collapse as an opportunity to fill his pockets. He’s what you’d get if Dracula was a businessman. But at the same time, we see a very “human” side to him when his own daughter appears and he forces her to turn – only for her to starve herself.

The film’s ending and Bromley’s death has become one of the most talked-about scenes of the film. Perhaps it’s because it’s exactly how we would like some billionaires to meet their end.

How Ethan Hawke Wanted to Expand the Daybreakers World

Although the film was a modest success, there was little talk about Daybreakers 2 among the producers of the original film. The same can’t be said of actor Ethan Hawke, who had some ideas about what he wanted to see in a Daybreakers sequel.

For a potential Daybreakers 2, Ethan Hawke had envisioned an approach that was similar to the Mad Max formula. He thought that a Daybreakers sequel would need to be radically different from the first film if it hoped to meet fans’ expectations. Additionally, he mentioned that he wanted to see the world of Daybreakers expanded, especially in terms of seeing the subside settlements in Nebraska. This all comes from a 2010 interview, however, so it has been a while before anyone related to the film has commented on the matter of a Daybreakers sequel.

In recent years, however, fans have rekindled their love for Daybreakers‘ uniqueness, not to mention how rife with potential a Daybreakers 2 could be. There’s also the matter of the original film’s outstanding cast: together, Ethan Hawke, Sam Neill, and Willem Dafoe created the perfect trifecta of quality acting that every fan wanted to see in a movie about futuristic vampires.

Ethan Hawke’s Full Pitch for a Daybreakers Sequel, in His Own Words

Even if there has been little to no buzz surrounding a prospective Daybreakers 2, the renewed fan attention, not to mention the renewed interest in vampire films – thanks, Morbius – might bring good news to Daybreakers fans. Other than that, Ethan Hawke is clearly a fan of the original movie, so if there’s ever a Daybreakers sequel, fans are more than likely to see him returning as the lead in that movie, too.

While promoting Daybreakers, Hawke shared his idea for a sequel with Gizmodo:

“Yeah! If imagine sometimes that Daybreakers could be Mad Max and the sequel to it could be Road Warrior. You know how different Mad Max was to Road Warrior, maybe Road Warrior is such a great sequel because it was completely different. But I’m really interested to see what it’s like in Nebraska with the subsiders. It could get really wild.”

Even though it’s taken a long time to develop, there’s been some news about World War Z 2 coming sometime in the future. If that movie can get a sequel, then surely Daybreakers 2 doesn’t sound all too far-fetched. After all, both movies ended with the promise of a better society on the horizon, and they both showed little progress in how their plagues were cured. Both vampires and zombies are some of the most iconic monsters in horror cinema, and it’s great to see them returning to the pedestal where they belong.

One thing is for sure: a Daybreakers sequel would bring us more of Willem Dafoe’s Elvis – and that’s pretty much what every vampire fan wants.

Is a Daybreakers 2 Sequel Actually Happening?

As of August 2026, there’s still no official news about a Daybreakers 2 happening. The Spierig Brothers’ other franchise, Fall 2, released in US theaters on August 7, 2026, but both Michael and Peter Spierig haven’t mentioned a sequel to their vampire film. But if it ever does, it now has to do something the original never had to do: honor Sam Neill’s part in the original.
