‘Part of Me’ is a chronicle of Katy’s ‘Teenage Dream Tour’. It is split between concert footage and behind the scenes material that reveals aspects of the starling’s personal life. The film also touches on Katy’s doomed marriage with Russell Brand showing how the pressures of their careers added to the demise of their relationship. We also get to see Perry’s struggle to the top of the music industry, her highs and lows and the challenges she had to face as an artist and individual within the cookie cutter music world.

All the hits from her smash album ‘Teenage Dream’ are performed, showing off Katy’s lovely voice. Her stage show is also closely filmed and her fascination with cartoon imagery and themes is the basis for her show. We see the tour move all over the world from Europe, the United States, South America and Asia. The difficulties of touring and being separated from loved ones reach a crescendo in Brazil when we see Katy break down emotionally. While the film does not say exactly what the problem is we can deduce that Russell might have severed ties with Katy at that stop of the tour. There are plenty of sweet moments too. A notable one is footage of Katy visiting her 90-year-old grandmother at her home in Las Vegas and bringing her up on stage the evening of Katy’s sold out show.

‘Part of Me’ reveals a keen artist who is both entertainer and songwriter. Even if you’re not a Katy or pop fan this film serves to entertain and intrigue any pop culture observer.
