A new Star Wars fan theory suggests that the service droid R2-D2 is the Chosen One. Is it ridiculous or could it actually be the truth?
For Star Wars fans, the Force is more than just a medium for the Jedi and the Sith to pull off cool-looking tricks that defy the laws of physics. The Force is a sentient being that engulfs the entire universe, shaping it through minimal influences that can lead the galaxy on a certain path. That’s why the matter of “bringing balance to the force” becomes so essential to the whole Star Wars canon.
In many legends of the Jedi and the Sith, some prophecies say that a particularly powerful individual shall bring a new balance to the powers of the Force. For the Prequel Trilogy, the Jedi believed that Anakin Skywalker was the Chosen One, the one that would finally clean the Force from the influences of the Dark Side. However, as we later discovered, it would be Luke Skywalker that would finally bring balance to the Force by defeating Darth Sidious, aka Emperor Palpatine — although, technically speaking, it was Anakin who defeated Palpatine by throwing him down a reactor shaft so he might be the Chosen One after all.
However, if there’s one thing that abounds in the Star Wars fandom, that would be outrageous fan theories. One that’s been making the rounds lately sounds so unlikely, that it would be hard to believe if it wasn’t so convincing: what if R2-D2 was the Chosen One?
George Lucas used Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress as his main inspiration when he was crafting the Original Trilogy back in the seventies. As such, much of Luke Skywalker’s story is seen through the eyes of C-3PO and R2-D2, the lovable pair of droids that also doubles as the trilogy’s frequent comic relief.
While C-3PO has also been a part of the Star Wars story since The Phantom Menace, R2-D2 has played an active part in the development of some of the franchise’s most critical points. He was there during Anakin’s first space dogfight, and he was also there during Luke Skywalker’s call to action. This tiny astromech droid has seen more action during the Star Wars saga than some of the series’ most seasoned veterans, and he has also led some Force-sensitive individuals towards their ultimate goals in the process.
It might sound a bit farfetched to say that a service droid is the Chosen One that the Jedi prophecy speaks of, but considering how flawed some of the Order’s teachings have been throughout the franchise’s history, who’s to say that the one chosen by the Force can’t be R2-D2?
Going back to The Hidden Fortress, some fans have mentioned the possibility that the entirety of the Star Wars saga is just a tale that’s being retold from the droids’ point of view. Considering C-3PO has had his memory wiped a bit more frequently than R2-D2 has, it would also make sense to think that the astromech droid would be the most reliable narrator between the two. This means that not only is R2-D2 the Chosen One, but he also acts as a point of cohesion for the whole Star Wars saga.
R2’s role extends beyond what we see in the movies: many fans have been quick to point out that the droid has also helped in some crucial developments in some chapters of Star Wars’ extended universe, not to mention that he’s also been seen in The Mandalorian and as a central character in the Sequel Trilogy, where he also acts as a sort of guide to Rey. In short, it’s highly unlikely that R2-D2 would be the Chosen One, but one can’t help but acknowledge that, without his help, the Dark Side would have crushed any opposition in the Star Wars saga.
