Sadly the “remake” of Star Wars Battlefront by DICE released several years ago caused a storm of criticism from “orthodox” fans of the franchise. The game was compared with shareware games, fans complained about the lack of a single-player campaign, but noted the excellent graphics and great design.
The sequel was supposed to correct the flaws of the “original” Battlefront, provide fans of the Star Wars series with original story campaign (on the side of Empire), and generally become richer, bigger, and better. But what happened in the end? Let’s try to figure it out.
The storyline of the Star Wars Battlefront 2
First things first – a small announcement. Battlefront 2, despite having a storyline, is primarily a network project. But today we will focus on the Campaign and the Arcade mode.
At the stage of the PR campaign, Electronic Arts preferred not to talk about the storyline. It was known that the heroine of the story will be Iden Versio – the head of the Inferno – elite imperial squad. It was emphasized that the scenario would allow us to look at the war between the rebels and Palpatine’s army from a completely different perspective.
But in the end, everything turned out to be different. Star Wars Battlefront 2 briefly talks about the fate of the Imperials. After a couple of plot twists, which we (of course) will not reveal, an intriguing story merges into the usual Star Wars channel.
The Gameplay of Star Wars Battlefront 2
The second discovery is the gameplay itself. Those who were expecting a Republic Commando-inspired action movie would be disappointed. Shooting from blasters in Star Wars Battlefront 2 is rare – Iden Versio will spend most of the time at the helm of an Imperial Fighter. This game frankly resembles a galaxy of brilliant releases from the past, ranging from Star Wars: Rebel Assault 2 – The Hidden Empire (PlayStation, PC) to the Rogue Squadron trilogy (Nintendo 64, GameCube, PC). The tasks that the command sets before the Inferno squad are structured as a significant part of the level has to be carried out either in space or in the atmosphere of one of the planets. However, all this looks spectacular – thanks to the Frostbite engine pumped to the maximum.
The entire Star Wars Battlefront 2 storyline is a wink over the shoulder to Star Wars movie fans. It quite weakly links the events of the sixth and seventh episodes, makes it possible to steer the iconic characters of the universe (Han Solo, Luke, Leia, Lando), makes you fly a lot on fighters, but very little – run as a “trooper”.
From the actual FPS gameplay, the sequel is so weak that you begin to understand why the authors chose to shift the focus from the Inferno squad to the popular heroes of the universe and flights in space.
Action and AI
With shooting there is a slightly different trick. In those cases when we control the heroes of the old trilogy, it becomes clear that Frostbite was simply not adapted for third-person shooters. In Battlefront 2, the heroes do not even know how to snuggle up to shelters.
Now – to the head of the Inferno squad. While Iden sits at the helm, everything is going smoothly. But as soon as the young lady lands, it becomes clear that first-person shooting in Battlefront 2 is depressing.
First of all, weapons. For the most part, it resembles “repainted” rifles from Battlefield. For comparison: in the Republic Commando, where we directed the clone squad throughout the storyline, there was no such problem, although the action game itself came out twelve years ago.
And finally, the fights. Battles take place mainly in open locations, and opponents are in no hurry to meet death but prefer to sit out in almost the farthest corners. This breaks down the perception of action movies based on Star Wars.
The most interesting thing is that Electronic Arts presented the plot as the story of a loyal servant of the empire. The conflict itself is hardly outlined, and Iden’s personal experiences are conveyed so inadvertently that you forget about it until the final scene. As a result, as already mentioned, we got a flimsy bridge between the sixth and seventh episodes. It’s much more interesting to play exciting free slot machine games than Star Wars Battlefront 2…
What is the main problem with Star Wars Battlefront 2?
In the years that have passed since the fourth episode was released, so many games have been created in the Star Wars universe that half of one magazine issue will go into their description. Some of them today are suitable only as a museum exhibit, but many set the tone for the entire genre. At Jedi Academy, lightsaber battles and the use of Force are ideally implemented; in Rogue Squadron, flights on spaceships. Republic Commando also boasted the best shooting among all the shooters based on the Star Wars franchise.
The single-player campaign in Star Wars Battlefront 2 tries to combine many genres, but it turns out to a certain extent bad. In the episode, when we, in the role of Luke, have to wave a lightsaber, it is frankly uninteresting to do this because of the “wooden” surroundings and the meagre amount of punches available. Story walkthroughs with flights on fighter jets are well set but monotonous.
The only good thing about Star Wars Battlefront 2 is the Arcade mode and Multiplayer. In Arcade Mode, you can play split-screen with friends or just train with bots. Plus, this is a great workout before competing in online battles with real players.
All aspects of Star Wars Battlefront 2 raise too many questions. The story lacks depth, the gameplay aspects are poorly developed, and the overall game is boring.
The final verdict – don’t bother yourself spending money on Star Wars Battlefront 2.
