Willem Dafoe As Joker: A Missed Opportunity For DC

The star of the Spider-Man franchise expresses a keen desire to portray a "Joker imposter" alongside Joaquin Phoenix's formidable supervillain.

Few fan castings have garnered as much fervour as the desire to see Willem Dafoe don the iconic makeup of the Joker. For years, enthusiasts have clamoured for this casting choice, yet Warner Brothers has consistently failed to seize the opportunity. Despite repeated appeals from fans, the elusive dream remains unfulfilled.

Is He Really Too Old?

At 65 years old, some may argue that Dafoe’s window to portray the Clown Prince of Crime has closed. However, proponents of this casting refuse to abandon hope. A solution presents itself in the form of the Flashpoint storyline. By utilizing Flashpoint’s reality-altering capabilities, DC could seamlessly introduce a universe where Willem Dafoe embodies the Joker, thus appeasing eager fans.

The forthcoming Flash movie hints at such narrative flexibility. While rectifying existing inconsistencies, Flashpoint could also pave the way for unexplored storylines and character dynamics. Picture a universe where Dafoe’s Joker emerges unexpectedly, slipping through the cracks of cosmic manipulation. This approach sidesteps the erasure of previous Jokers while introducing a fresh interpretation into the DC Extended Universe (DCEU).

Michael Keaton’s Nemesis

Michael Keaton’s Batman serves as a prime example of a character bereft of his arch-nemesis. With the demise of the Joker in the 1989 film, an opportunity arises for Willem Dafoe’s Joker to assume the role of his new adversary. Keaton’s seasoned vigilante facing off against a new, potentially more menacing Joker adds layers of intrigue and conflict to the narrative.

Furthermore, Dafoe’s Joker could catalyze the adaptation of the beloved Batman Beyond storyline. As an ageing Batman mentors a new generation, the emergence of a formidable foe becomes paramount. Dafoe’s portrayal offers familiarity and gravitas, ensuring audience engagement while exploring uncharted territory in the Batman mythos.

While some argue that the Joker has been overexposed in Batman media, his enduring popularity cannot be denied. The success of the Joker standalone film underscores the character’s magnetic appeal. Willem Dafoe’s involvement would undoubtedly elevate the project, generating buzz and anticipation among fans and casual viewers alike. Plus, his take on Joker would probably be different from Heath Ledger’s Joker or Joaquin Phoenix’s.

He Wants To Do It

Willem Dafoe (who is one of the few actors that nobody dislikes) is renowned for his portrayal of the Green Goblin in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man films and, most recently, in Tom Holland’s No Way Home. However, the actor also disclosed his ongoing interest in embodying another iconic supervillain: the Joker, or a variant thereof, at least.

During a segment on Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Fallon remarked on the widespread desire for Dafoe to tackle the role of Batman’s ultimate adversary. In response, Dafoe humorously replied, “Hasn’t that been done?”

However, he quickly added, “You know, talk to Warner Bros…” And then laughed out loud. “I floated an idea a while ago, but it didn’t quite happen, so…”

When asked to elaborate, Dafoe continued, “Listen, I didn’t really float it to them. I just mentioned it in an interview and then it kind of went out on the internet. But I thought it would be cool for me to play an imposter — like slipstreaming his thing.”

It wasn’t the first time that Willem Dafoe has mentioned 2019’s Joker, either.

“There is something interesting about, like, if there was a Joker imposter,” he told GQ. “So it would be possible to have not dueling Jokers, but someone that [claims] to be the Joker that isn’t the Joker. And that kind of opens up the possibility of an interesting story, particularly if you had Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, and then you had someone who was either imitating or riffing off what he did. I fantasized about that. But other than that I am not talking to anybody [about it]. You’re the first one.”

It’s certainly an interesting idea.

Willem Dafoe Definitely Has The Range To Pull Off Joker

Willem Dafoe as Joker

In contemplating Willem Dafoe’s potential as the Joker, one cannot overlook the actor’s transformative abilities. His portrayal would undoubtedly inject the character with a fresh vitality, captivating audiences and reigniting interest in the DCEU.

As DC embraces the multiverse concept, the time has come to actualize fan desires. Willem Dafoe as the Joker represents not only a missed opportunity but a future reality waiting to be realized. It’s a casting choice that has the potential to redefine the superhero genre and captivate audiences worldwide.

In conclusion, the question remains: Should Willem Dafoe assume the mantle of the Joker in the DCEU? The answer lies in the hands of both fans and decision-makers. As we eagerly await the unfolding of DC’s cinematic universe, one thing is certain—Willem Dafoe’s Joker would be a force to be reckoned with.
