Sony is developing a Venom sequel! The news was confirmed with the announcement of Kelly Marcel (who worked as a writer on the first movie) taking the reigns to pen Venom 2.
According to reports, Marcel’s deal to return was a “significant one” and along with her writing duties, she’ll also serve as executive producer.
While the first movie may not have fared well critically, Venom’s massive box office success cemented it as one of 2018’s most commercially successful movies. As a result, it’s not surprising that Sony gave the green light to a sequel back in November, when it was reported that the studio had dated an “untitled Sony-Marvel sequel” for late 2020.
Venom starred Tom Hardy as the Spider-Man anti-hero, alongside Michelle Williams in a story that followed journalist Eddie Brock in his quest to take down Carlton Drake, the notorious and brilliant founder of the Life Foundation. While investigating one of Drake’s experiments Eddie’s body merges with the alien, Venom.
The movie also included a cameo by Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady – a serial killer who becomes Venom’s arch nemesis, Carnage. All three actors are set to reprise their roles for the sequel, with Harrelson’s role expected to be expanded as the movie’s main villain.
Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing the movie. Although no director has been confirmed just yet, Ruben Fleischer who directed the first instalment is expected to return. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner penned earlier drafts of Venom, but they won’t be involved with Venom 2.
