After a lot of back and forth, and even an early leak, 20th Century Fox has finally released the first Dark Phoenix trailer. And it does not disappoint.
The film, which is loosely based around the ’80s The Dark Phoenix Saga by Chris Claremont, Dave Cockrum and John Byrne, sees the group lead by James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier go up against Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey as she assumes the power of the Phoenix Force and slowly begins to turn evil.
Yes, we’ve seen some of this story before in X-Men: The Last Stand. However, this seems a lot more focused and feels a lot faithful to the comic book. With some of the blame placed on Professor X, there is no doubt that this event is about to change the X-Men, and the franchise as a whole, forever.
The X-men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiralling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
Dark Phoenix opens February 14, 2019, and also stars Jennifer Lawrence, Evan Peters, Tye Sheridan, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alexandra Shipp, and Jessica Chastain.
