Will The Last Of Us’ Ellie Join The Mortal Kombat Roster? Ed Boon Responds

Could Ellie Williams from The Last of Us be trading fighting Clickers for fighting monsters in Mortal Kombat?

Some fans want to see The Last of Us‘ Ellie Williams in Mortal Kombat. Ed Boon, the mastermind behind the game, weighs in on the possibility.

Ever since the rumours of MK12 (now officially titled Mortal Kombat 1), fans have been flooding Ed Boon with roster wishlists and character requests. Ellie Williams — you know, the knife-wielding apocalypse teen played by Bella Ramsey in The Last of Us — has become even more iconic since HBO turned the hit video game into a prestige TV juggernaut. Naturally, someone on Twitter thought, “Hey, why not throw Ellie into Mortal Kombat and let her finish people with dad jokes and switchblades?” Ed Boon swiftly noped out of that idea. He basically said that sweet little Ellie has no business ripping out spines in Mortal Kombat – even if the character played the game in Season 1 episode 3 of The Last of Us.

A Twitter account by the name of Erickson Gaming replied to Noobde with the request, saying: “Let’s get Ellie in MK 12 Ed!!?”

Ed Boon responded swiftly with: “NOPE. I don’t want to see fatalities on her. I mean … MK12? What are you talking about?”

Ellie was just a kid in the first Last of Us game—tough as nails, sure, but still way too young to be uppercutting people into acid pits. So, yeah, dropping her into the Mortal Kombat roster back then would’ve felt… kinda wrong. Fast forward to Part II, and Ellie’s all grown up at 19, brooding, guitar-playing, and fully capable of throwing hands. Suddenly, the idea doesn’t sound as wild—until you remember what Mortal Kombat actually is: a glorified gore fest where characters get ripped in half.

Let’s be honest—Ellie’s story in The Last of Us is soaked in trauma, loss, and emotional depth. Putting her in Mortal Kombat would flatten all that nuance just to watch her get decapitated in 4K slow motion. Cool crossover idea? Maybe. But maybe let’s leave Ellie to her zombies and emotional damage, and let Mortal Kombat recruit someone less likely to make us feel guilty mid-Fatality.

Besides, Ellie has bigger problems right now. Looks like the trolls have logged back on and crawled out of their digital caves to review bomb The Last of Us Season 2. For the uninitiated, review-bombing is basically when a swarm of angry keyboard warriors team up to tank a show or movie’s ratings on aggregator sites—usually because they’re mad, bored, or didn’t get what they wanted. This time, it’s The Last of Us in the crosshairs.

Season 2’s audience score is dropping faster than a clicker with no legs. Just a few hours ago, it was clinging to a shaky 55%—and now it’s slipped even further down to 52%. At this rate, it might need Joel to carry it across the finish line.

Most of the noise seems to be coming from gamers who’ve played Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. Their main gripe? The casting of Bella Ramsey as Ellie, who they feel doesn’t look the part.

Perhaps that’s part of the sick reason why certain fans were hoping to see Ellie in Mortal Kombat, who knows? For now, fans can enjoy new episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and Max.
