Michael Bay’s OutRun movie is about to bring the ultimate arcade thrills to the big screen—with Sydney Sweeney in the driver’s seat.
Just about every classic retro game is getting its time on the big screen now, from the mushroom kingdom of Super Mario Bros. to the blocky world of Minecraft. The latest title to join the ranks is OutRun. Yes, they’re making a movie based on a 1980s arcade racer from SEGA where the main plot is about… driving around a city, of course. Sounds like a bit of a stretch for a feature film, right? But here we are. In 2025, IP is more important than originality.
So, what could possibly make OutRun worthy of a movie? Back in its heyday, the 16-bit game became the biggest arcade title of 1987, helping to save video game arcades from fading popularity. That’s definitely not bad for a game where all you did was race a Ferrari Testarossa through a virtual city, dodging traffic while trying to beat the clock. And truth be told, it was a winning formula. OutRun didn’t need much of a story—just a cool car, a really cool soundtrack, and fast-paced racing.

So, how exactly are they going to stretch that idea into a full feature film? Enter Transformers mastermind Michael Bay and Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney. Universal is currently developing with Bay set to direct and Sweeney producing through her Fifty-Fifty Films label. There’s no word yet on whether Sweeney will actually star, but given her popularity right now, it only makes sense.
Plot details about the OutRun movie are being kept under wraps, but if Michael Bay’s name is on the project (and Jayson Rothwell is writing), you can expect explosions, fast cars, and a whole lot of action (like the latest Fast and the Furious movies).
We’re still waiting on a Cadillacs and Dinosaurs movie. And while they’re at it, we’ll take Metal Slug movie and a live-action Contra movie too. If they’re going to make films out of all these retro games, they might as well do some of our favourites.
