Jacob Fischer, Editor-In-Chief at Discussing Film, dropped some intriguing news recently. Fischer tweeted that Superman: Legacy star David Corenswet auditioned for the role of Adam Warlock in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

The tweet read, ‘Was looking through some old papers & drafts that I created, re-found that David Corenswet taped for Adam Warlock for GOTG 3. And now he’s Superman in Gunn’s movie!’
Neither Gunn nor Corenswet have confirmed the audition, but it seems like a plausible conjecture on Fisher’s part. Corenswet is James Gunn’s lead star in the upcoming Superman: Legacy. Gunn might have been impressed enough by Corenswet’s audition for Adam Warlock that he considered him for the role of Superman.

Corenswet lost the role of Adam Warlock to The Maze Runner, Midsommar and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader star Will Poulter. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was one of Marvel’s biggest hits this past year. Gunn and Poulter’s Adam Warlock was a radical departure from the comic book version of the character; while the film was a success, only some were happy with the dumbed-down, silly version of the character in the film.

Adam Warlock is an essential superhero in the Marvel Universe and features prominently in iconic comic book stories like The Infinity Gauntlet by writer Jim Starling. In the pages of the story, Adam Warlock leads Earth’s heroes against Thanos as he seeks to erase half of all life in the universe. Adam Warlock’s prominence in the comics means he is one of the most powerful superheroes in the universe.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 version of Adam Warlock differed from the classical version of the character. The film’s comedic tone necessitated that Warlock be more for comedic relief and ignores the hero’s deep ties to Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet. David Corenswet’s physique resembles the classical character portrayal in the comics.
Perhaps Gunn didn’t cast Coreswet as Warlock because they needed someone to play an alternative character version. Coreswet would have been suited to play a more comic book-accurate version of the character, more stoic like in the comics.

James Gunn also saw something in Corenswet in his audition that could have made a deep impression on the director, which led him to consider Corenswet for the role in Superman: Legacy. Either way, we must thank Guardians of the Galaxy and Adam Warlock for bequeathing the role of Corenswet. Let’s hope that the actor will give an excellent performance and that James Gunn wrote a good script to satisfy fans and help them deal with the loss of Henry Cavill as Superman. James Gunn also recently tweeted that Superman: Legacy will be released on 11 July 2025.
