Well, peeps, it’s pretty much official that Johnny Cage won’t be showing up in the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie. We called it on a recent video and Sub-Zero himself, Joe Taslim, let the cat out of the bag in an interview as well. Appearing on Scott Adkins’ The Art of Action, Taslim briefly discussed the topic of Mortal Kombat. Towards the end of the conversation, however, Taslim told Adkins that he’d really like for him to appear in the sequel. He added that he wants to see Scott Adkins as Johnny Cage.
It’s an aspiring casting and one that we can definitely get behind. The good news is, Scott Adkins is onboard with the idea of playing Johnny Cage, too, saying that he’s available for the part. Plus, it helps that he’s a huge fan of the video game and the original film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson.
At the same time, many Mortal Kombat fans might be disappointed that Cage won’t be showing up in this new reboot. After all, he’s royalty in the MK universe and you’d expect him to be one of the first names in any script.
Like we said in our video, though, it’s no cause for concern because the filmmakers are approaching the worldbuilding in a more cautious and patient manner. Instead of stuffing the movie with every single character from the video game series (and there are many!), they’re focusing on a specific set of individuals for now and can introduce the others at a later stage.
I mean, it makes complete sense to centre the first Mortal Kombat movie around Sub-Zero and Scorpion’s history, especially since they’re the most iconic and popular characters from the game. There’s plenty of time for Johnny Cage in the future, hopefully with Scott Adkins in the role.
