After a leak earlier today, it seems that Lionsgate has decided to release the first trailer for Neil Marshall’s hotly anticipated Hellboy a day early. The R-rated film, starring Stranger Things’ David Harbour as the titular Dark Horse Comics character of the same name, seems to have done away with Guillermo Del Toro and Ron Perlman’s version of the Beast of the Apocalypse. In fact, it may surprise fans just how comedic and bouncy this new take is.
Taking a page out of Marvel’s playbook, the new Hellboy seems to attempt putting humour and comedy before action and adventure. It’s even accompanied by strange music choice, Billy Idol’s “Mony Mony”.
Clocking in at two minutes and 20 seconds, the new trailer does well to set up the tension between Hellboy’s attempts to do good by fighting off hellish monsters, while being completely misunderstood by those around him.
The film stars David Harbour as Hellboy, Ian McShane as Trevor Bruttenholm, Milla Jovovich as Nimue, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, Penelope Mitchell as Ganeida and Daniel Dae Kim as Ben Daimio.
