Despite the recent reduction in loadshedding over the past few weeks, there’s still no end. Now with the schedules being increased again for the foreseeable future, we’re again left in search of optimised power solutions for everyday use. Keeping your smartphone charged has become one of the most important aspects of the modern lifestyle. As such, you need an easy solution to keep it powered even when there is no regular power supply. The Xiaomi Mi 50W 20,000mAh Power Bank provides a great option for users.

Build and Design
While there is a lot of potential in designing a power bank, the trend, especially for larger capacity options, is to remain as minimal as possible. That’s no different with the Xiaomi Mi 50W. Owning a few similar power banks, it is by far the most minimalist of the lot. And that suits me perfectly.
It has an all-over matte black finish made from a plastic polymer. It features the conventional rectangular prism shape with rounded sides. However, this unit has a smooth finish, unlike many others with a textured cover. The simplicity of the design is only broken by the glossy “Mi” logo on the top and the ports on the front.
Speaking of which, there are only three ports on the front end. This includes two USB output ports and one USB Type-C port to recharge the device. Four small, white LED lights above the central Type-C port indicate the device’s remaining charge. These LEDs are barely noticeable and only visible when the lights are on. To view this, you can simply press the power button on the left side of the device.
The device is relatively lightweight for its large capacity. It measures 154x74x28mm, making it compact enough to fit in your pants pocket. Additionally, it also weighs 470g. This is about double the weight of a modern smartphone but still, light enough to carry about in your pants pocket or purse.

A good balance between a minimalist aesthetic and a solid build exists.
With its 50W fast-charging capabilities, the Xiaomi 50W 20,000mAh Power Bank focuses more on performance than visual trinkets. And that’s a good thing.
One of the first impressive aspects of the power bank is its fast-charging capabilities. Often, these are just on-paper specifications that don’t mean much or don’t meet expectations. Thankfully, that’s not the case here. The Xiaomi 50W power bank brings fast charging, allowing users to charge their compatible smartphones quickly. Given the larger batteries on many flagship smartphones, this is a great feature, where some standard power banks can often take twice as long to charge.
Interestingly, the Type-C port also doubles as both input and output. This means you can charge the power bank and your external device from the same port, which is quite nifty.

Speaking of charging, the power bank’s 20,000mAh Lithium polymer battery is quite a bit to refill. However, the device supports 45W recharging, reducing the recharge time to just 4.5 hours.
Several voltage and amp options are available from the two types of USB ports. These are:
- USB-A: 5V 3A, 9V 2.23A, 12V 1.67A, 10V 2.25A
- Type-C: 5V 3A, 9V 3A, 10V 5A, 12V 3A, 15V 3A, 20V 2A
As a result, users can recharge several different devices apart from the conventional smartphone. This includes the latest MacBook Pro, Xiaomi Notebook and other laptops, and the Nintendo Switch. This makes it quite flexible in its use cases, allowing users to charge almost all their modern devices.
