When M-Net announced it would be partnering with Nu Metro to host the premiere of the first episode from the eighth season of Game of Thrones, I was a bit wearisome about attending an event at 2AM on a Monday morning. As the hype and anticipation grew leading up to the date, I couldn’t help but jump on board. There was also the ever-present fear that there would be quite a few spoilers floating around social media thanks to the many hordes with zero tact.
Having expected a handful of guests at a fairly reversed event, I was surprised at the level of preparations that went into putting the event together. There were quite a number of eager Game of Thrones fans in attendance, some of which went the extra mile and dressed in full cosplay for the auspicious occasion. M-Net and Nu Metro pulled out all the stops with your choice of drinks and coffee bar, as well as gourmet sandwiches, flapjacks and even sweets bar.
When it was time to take our seats in anticipation for the final season’s premiere, you could feel the energy in the crowd. People cheered as M-Net screened a 10-minute behind the scenes clip and when the famous Game of Thrones theme song started rolling, the crowd broke out into spontaneous rapture. To say the first episode delivered shock and awe is an understatement. I cannot tell if it was the two-year wait for it to finally reach us again, the overwhelming feeling that we’re on the final season, now with only five more episodes to go or just the great first episode itself. It was all compelling.
As the episode ended, in typical Game of Thrones fashion, I could tell that when attendees walked out of the theatre that there was a great sense of child-like glee as we head into the second episode next Sunday. As we have to patiently wait for the next episode to arrive, I’ll definitely be revisiting the first on a few more occasions before then.
