GTA 6 has a release date again — May 26, 2026 — and yes, it’s official this time. Or at least as official as anything can be in the chaotic, billion-dollar world of game development. Rockstar Games is making history, again. Not just with the scale of Grand Theft Auto VI, but with the price tag too. According to former World of Warcraft team lead Mark Kern (@Grummz), the game’s budget is an eye-watering $2 billion. “Not joking,” he posted on X.
But the real drama? No one at Rockstar seems to know what’s going on with the GTA 6 delays.
“There is a lot of speculation,” Kern revealed on X, “but I do have a couple people who are close to the development of the game… the game is looking good, but they just want to take the year to really polish it.” He added, “Most devs don’t know the reason [for the delay]. The team is so massive and AAA devs are so isolated from the game vision, that they literally have no idea.”

“They don’t even know the full story of the game, or seem to play the daily builds enough to know what is changing,” he continued.
That’s wild. Imagine working on a game for years and not knowing what it’s about. According to Kern, unless you’re on the story team, you might be just as in the dark as the fans waiting to play it. Daily builds aren’t being widely played, and changes are so compartmentalized, even internal teams can’t see the full picture.
So, is this GTA 6 delay really about diversity and inclusion (DEI) like some of the louder corners of the internet have claimed? Probably not. Even Kern says the people inside don’t think that’s the case — because they just don’t know. The mystery isn’t the delay. It’s the secrecy.

Rockstar’s official stance is simple: more time is needed to meet expectations. “We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game,” the company said in a post. “We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
And what are those expectations, really? A franchise that’s spent 25 years pushing buttons and boundaries — from reckless violence to eyebrow-raising stereotypes — isn’t about to suddenly play nice. GTA 6 is still a Rockstar game. Whether it lands as a masterpiece or a meme factory, that $2 billion has already reshaped the release calendar. Titles like Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, EA’s new Battlefield title, Exodus, and whatever else is planned for 2026 may want to consider releasing during a quieter time of the year.
Because, honestly, when GTA 6 drops, everyone else needs to get out of the way.
