For those who don’t know, Jean-Claude Van Damme was originally cast as the alien in John McTiernan’s 1987 Predator film. Of course, this was before the alien got redesigned by Steve Wang and recast with a much taller Kevin Peter Hall. Don’t believe me? Check it out yourself… See Jean-Claude Van Damme in the original Predator costume!
Makeup FX innovator, Steve Johnson (GHOSTBUSTERS, SPECIES, BLADE 2) shares the inside story on what went wrong with the original Boss Films PREDATOR suit, worn by martial artist and aspiring action star Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Predator is a 1987 American science fiction action horror film directed by John McTiernan. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite special forces team who are on a mission to rescue hostages from guerrilla territory in Central America. Kevin Peter Hall co-stars as the titular antagonist, a technologically advanced form of extraterrestrial life secretly stalking and hunting the group. Predator was written by Jim and John Thomas in 1985, under the working title of Hunter.
This costume was not scary at all. The one we all know and love was so TERRIFYING.
