Over the last two years, there have been a lot of rumours regarding a Matrix sequel starring Michael B. Jordan. That rumour has resurfaced with news from Discussing Film that the original directors, The Wachowski brothers (now sisters), are back on board to direct. Furthermore, it seems that the film is already beginning production.
According to the report, Matrix 4, currently under the working title “Project Ice Cream”, is set to start filming in Chicago next year. According to their source, Michael B. Jordan will star and also produce.
“As previously reported by THR, Zak Penn will write the screenplay and Michael B Jordan will star. We have learned that the Wachowskis will return to direct the film and will begin production in early 2020 in Chicago, they have been secretly prepping the film under the working title “Project Ice Cream”. Plot details are currently under wraps for the film however the project is already beginning to fill out its crew with Hugh Bateup, who was an art director on 1999’s ‘The Matrix’ set to return to the franchise as the production designer for this film.”
Of course, at this point, the plot details are still unknown. That said, Keanu Reeves has expressed his interest in returning to the franchise. “That would be a gift. I wouldn’t say no to that,” the actor recently commented while promoting John Wick 3.
Whether or not Jordan’s character would surface as a new saviour, or a new Neo, remains to be seen. It’s been suggested that his character would be a descendant of Morpheus instead.
Interestingly, The Wachowski’s originally wrote Neo’s character as African-American. In fact, Will Smith was The Wachowski’s first choice to star as Neo. After he turned down the role, Keanu Reeves was cast.
If the next Matrix film is indeed a reboot, it would be interesting to finally see that vision realised.
