MATRIX movie

There have been several rumours regarding a possible Matrix reboot over the years. Now, writer Zak Penn has opened up to Screenrant about the project and revealed that it won’t be a reboot or a remake but will instead continue the story by expanding on the existing universe.

While promoting Ready Player One, Penn commented on the similarities between the two franchises and his plans for The Matrix moving forward:

“I’ve been working on Matrix right now. Which is in…a phase right now. That’s a franchise I desperately want to see brought back and, I can’t go in to too much detail, but I’ve been harassing Warner Bros. for years to try to get it going again so that’s one thing I’m working on and I’ve been working on a bunch of other things too. I will fight people who don’t under…look, I think OASIS (the interconnected virtual space in Ready Player One) is similar, both the Matrix and OASIS are similar in that they are brilliant ideas for universes. And they are not, you know, when it came out about Matrix, people were like ‘Oh no, they’re going to reboot Matrix I was like, Why, I’m not insane. I mean, The Matrix is still one of my favourites…they’d re-release The Matrix and people would go see it.”

Another rumour that made the rounds on the Internet is that Michael B. Jordan would star as a younger Morpheus, the iconic character played by Laurence Fishburne. While Penn didn’t comment on this, he did mention that the film wouldn’t necessarily feature any of the characters from the original trilogy:

” I was at the premiere and I was still like, this was better than I ever expected. So I just think that universe is brilliant, I think OASIS is like the action-comedy version of that and it doesn’t always have to be the same characters, you could go in so many different directions so…”

Regardless, the franchise holds a special place in the hearts of most fans. Seeing new characters or even the same characters reborn in some or other way sounds like a bad idea. Some things are better left alone. The Matrix Trilogy are among those things.

  1. I actually think it’s a good idea – if done correctly.

But change it up if you’re that worried; how about new actors discovering the Matrix and other new “programs”… make it interesting. Labyrinths and laws of physics defied.

I could go for that. Just make the actors believable. True talent seen in other films. And for God sake, leave Ben Affleck out of it.

    • Daniel Meléndez really? I was not aware of this at all. That’s very interesting. I think I’ll look into that but I really hope that they do something like this as I think it would be very interesting.

  2. The Matrix story still has the potential for spin-off movies/tv shows and maybe some in-between sequels (the 6-month gap between the first two movies has room for it). I am down for more Matrix.
