Zack Snyder has been laying low since stepping away from directing Justice League in May of 2017. Taking the time to work on a short film which was shot exclusively on an iPhone and lending his producing skills to some of the more recent DCEU projects, the Batman v Superman director has spent the good part of the two years enjoying a well-deserved break from the industry. However, fans will be glad to hear that Snyder will be returning to the director’s chair with a zombie film, Army of the Dead, for Netflix.
For those who don’t know, Zack Snyder had his big break with a reboot of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 2004. The zombie action film, which was written by James Gunn, probably has the highest score of any of Snyder’s films on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 75% approval rating. It only makes good sense then for the acclaimed director to return to the genre again as he continues to further his career away from Warner Bros and the comic book genre.
Snyder will also produce the movie alongside his wife, Deborah Snyder, under their newly formed production company, Stone Quarry.
According to THR reports, Army of the Dead, which may or may not be a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, has been in pre-production at Warner Bros. since 2007. After leaving the project to pursue Watchmen, Snyder has finally decided to pick it up again.
“There are no handcuffs on me at all with this one,” Zack Snyder told THR. “I thought this was a good palate cleanser to really dig in with both hands and make something fun and epic and crazy and bonkers in the best possible way.”
“I love to honour canon and the works of art,” Snyder said of his adaptations, “but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself through a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware — but not in a wink-to-the-camera way — balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this]. I love big action, I love big sequences. My movie brain starts clicking around and I was like, ‘We need to be shooting this now!’ Constructing these sequences really fired me up.”
Twitter responses to the news is mostly positive, with many fans excited for the release.
Already got my fingers crossed that Army of the Dead gets a limited theatrical run because even as a Netflix subscriber I will pay to see Zack Snyder on the big screen.

Army of the Dead begins shooting this year and has a budget of around $90 million (fairly low for a Zack Snyder film).
