Even though Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off film, Venom, starring Tom Hardy as photographer Eddie Brock, has been filming since October, the cast continues to grow with each month. It has now been revealed that director Ruben Fleischer is bringing his War For The Planet Of The Apes star, Woody Harrelson, in. Could he be cast as Carnage?
According to The Wrap, Harrelson is currently in talks with the studio to join in an undisclosed role. It’s probably a good guess that he is playing Cletus Kasady, aka Carnage, the film’s villain. Considering his recent success with The Hunger Games films, True Detective and a long list of other great performances, it is easy to argue that Harrelson is the biggest star attached to the project alongside of the film’s lead, Tom Hardy. It only makes sense to give him the most important role available.
Carnage is a character that Marvel fans have wanted to see on the big screen for a very long time. The part requires a really strong performance, especially in light of the fact that Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock will be the calmer or less crazy one of the two.
For those who aren’t familiar, Carnage is a result of the symbiote bonding with serial killer Cletus Kasady (who goes to prison for murdering 11 people). After sharing a cell with Eddie Brock, the offspring of the symbiote bonds with Cletus and gives him remarkable abilities. Similar to Venom, the symbiote accents the extreme personality traits of those it bonds with and makes Carnage an even more horrific being.
Harrelson will join a fairly impressive cast list, which includes Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate.
