Here’s your chance to win an amazing The Matrix Resurrections hamper.
Very few movies have been as anticipated this year as The Matrix Resurrections. The release of what could be the return of one of the most influential action sci-fi films of all time is nearly upon us, and fans have been noticing the small clues hidden everywhere in the recent trailers.
This week, the movie’s final trailer dropped, revealing some very interesting aspects about the brave new world of Matrix Resurrections. For starters, the idea that not everything might be as it seems is repeated in this trailer, pretty much confirming fans’ theories about the looping nature of the film.
There are many questions still left unanswered by the trailers. In this moment of wild fan theories and compulsively hidden details, we’re left with the reassuring realisation that yes: Neo still knows kung fu.
Echoes and Memories
If you have only watched the very first Matrix film – which is completely understandable, given the divisive nature of the sequels – the phrase “I still know kung fu” might seem like a playful quote referencing the first movie. However, this phrase hides so much more meaning for fans who have seen how the original Matrix trilogy ended in The Matrix Revolutions.
The trailer makes it abundantly clear that the main conflict in The Matrix Resurrections will be about Neo fighting to reunite with Trinity – which is already more than just a bit weird. Let’s not forget that both characters didn’t survive the end of Revolutions, with only Neo’s fate being more or less ambiguous than Trinity’s.
Seeing them reunited, along with the recurring theme of echoes and time loops seems to indicate that there might be some “Eternal return” shenanigans going on behind the scenes with the latest film. After all, one of the things that made the first Matrix so popular amongst its fanbase is how heavily it leaned on its philosophical themes.
Neo confirming that he still knows kung fu, and seeing his powers expanded upon, would confirm that he has returned in full force, retaining at least some of the memories of what happened in the original three Matrix movies. It also means that we’ll get a film that gives us Neo as a hero nearly from the start, which pretty much erases some fans’ concerns about The Matrix Resurrections being a soft reboot of the franchise.
(Un)Familiar Faces
Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his legendary role as Neo, even though he looks like he’s about to film a John Wick film. Carrie-Anne Moss is also coming back as Trinity, completing the power couple that made the original Matrix movies so good.
However, some other popular names are conspicuously absent from The Matrix Resurrections, namely Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. In Weaving’s case, his absence is due to schedule conflicts; Fishburne’s situation is a bit more interesting.
Even though the veteran actor won’t be returning for The Matrix Resurrections, his character, Morpheus, does. Resurrections’ Morpheus is a younger version of Fishburne’s character, a fact that could tie in with the whole temporal loop situation.
The mysteries surrounding The Matrix Resurrections will be revealed very soon, when the movie releases on December 22nd. Fans of the franchise are sure to get some answers to some of the most pressing questions left after the ending of the original Matrix trilogy – and action fans are sure to get a healthy dose of kung fu courtesy of Keanu reeves.
