It has been rumoured that the upcoming Venom 3film will be the last instalment in the Venom franchise. Tom Hardy, the Venom star himself, recently shared a post on his Instagram alluding to this as well. In his own words, the actor referred to Venom 3 as “the last dance”. It seems this refers specifically to solo Venom films, only implying that fans can still expect Hardy to make appearances in future films in the Spider-Man Universe. However, these remain speculations as nothing has been confirmed as yet.

Tom Hardy is a respected and well-loved actor among fans and fellow actors alike. He is best known for his roles in Black Hawk Down, Star Trek: Nemesis and Mad Max: Fury Road. The star was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in The Revenant and has appeared in no less than three Christopher Nolan films: Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Dunkirk (2017). With such an impressive resume, his star power undoubtedly played a significant role in the success of the first film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe/Spider-Verse (SSU), Venom (2018) and its 2021 sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Hardy plays the role of Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist who becomes the host of Venom, an alien symbiote that imbues him with super-human abilities. The relationship between Brock and Venom, however, is unique. Venom director Ruben Fleischer described it as being unlike a werewolf or the well-known Jekyll and Hyde dichotomy but rather a “hybrid” where the two characters share a body, each with their own distinctive thoughts, desires and motives but also at times working together to attain the same goal.
Part of the appeal of Eddie Brock’s character is that he is an antihero who would “do whatever he has to” to achieve what he’s set out to do. The fun for us as an audience, though, is when the two really don’t see eye-to-eye about what needs to happen and when. This takes place mainly in the first film, and it’s been entertaining to watch these two characters figure out how they can make their symbiosis work.
Venom 3 was a natural next step to the box office successes of the first ($856 million globally) and second ($502 million globally) films in the Venom trilogy. Fans would be happy to know that Kelly Marcel, writer for the first two films, is directing and writing the third as well, but no one is happier than Hardy himself.
“I want to mention very briefly how proud of my director, writing partner and dear friend Kelly Marcel. Watching you taking the helm on this one fills me with pride, it is an honour. Trust your gut, your instincts are always spot on. First class – I back you.”
