Disney has released a new trailer for the live-action Aladdin movie which reveals Will Smith as Genie. The one minute trailer debuted during The Grammy Awards this past Sunday. In addition to Smith as Genie, the trailer gives fans a look at Aladdin and Abu, Princess Jasmine, the villainous Jafar leading Aladdin into the Cave of Wonders, and the beautiful city of Agrabah. But Will Smith’s Genie stole the show – and not necessarily in a good way.
Fans took to social media to express mixed reactions about Genie’s reveal with some willing to give it a chance and others slamming the CGI, the make-up, the design and the actor.
Smith takes on the role previously voiced by Robin Williams and promised, in an Entertainment Weekly first-look interview last December, to bring a “hip hop flavour” to the role.
The movie is said to follow the original 1992 storyline closely, as we join the charming street urchin Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future in an exciting adventure.
The film, directed by Guy Ritchie, stars Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Will Smith as the Genie, and Marwan Kenzari as the evil Jafar.
Navid Negahban will be playing the Sultan. Frank Welker will reprise his role as voice actor for Abu, Aladdin’s mischievous pet monkey, as well as the voice of the Cave of Wonders.
Fans can also look forward to a few new characters such as Dalia, a handmaiden and friend of Princess Jasmine played by Nasim Pedrad, and Billy Magnussen as a new character called Prince Anders.
The soundtrack will include new recordings of the original film’s songs written by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice. Merken will also be co-writing new songs for the film with La La Land songwriters Pasek and Paul.
