I first dismissed Wake Up and Die almost entirely out of hand, because the box blurb seemed to tell the entire plot of the movie. And when a DVD usually does this, it’s because the makers of the film are almost begging you not to watch the film; to show to you in some abstract way that there’s no point. Surprisingly, this movie isn’t actually quite as bad as that, so that’s nice for it.
The film only stars two characters within a confined space; Clarissa and Dorian. Clarissa wakes up one morning next to Dorian in his bed; with no memory of how she got there. Dorian proceeds to first rape and then murder her; whereupon she wakes up in the bed again; in a horrific version of Groundhog Day. The horror is equal parts violent; sexual and psychological; and in terms of making a disturbing movie certainly achieves it. It’s a very weird movie; and if you are not made at the very least uneasy; you are a stronger person than I.
At the same time; the film manages to be actually successful; it horrifies; with a very small set and only two characters; it manages to create real emotions in the viewer. Some may find it grotesque; and it certainly is so; but at the least it manages to be a success as a movie for that reason; even if it can seem over the top somewhat in its displays. Something for horror/thriller aficionados to check out; the mainstream public probably won’t have a point for this title.
