When it comes to the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths – the sixth annual crossover event which will feature on The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman in their TV shows – it appears that they’re going to make fans’ wishes come true thanks by casting the best Batman ever.
First, it was announced that Burt Ward, who played Batman’s sidekick Robin in the classic ‘60s Batman show, would be returning (and hopefully he’s bringing the classic Batmobile with him). Next there was the announcement of Brandon Routh returning to his Superman Returns roots as the man of steel, while pulling double duty as Legends regular character The Atom… and with his incarnation of Superman being the one from a Kingdom Come-inspired Earth, which should allow him the chance to say a proper farewell to the character. Then Cress Williams confirmed that Black Lightning will be featuring in the crossover too.
But it’s the latest announcement of Kevin Conroy joining the cast that has sent fans into overdrive, and that may not be the only super guest-casting that’s in store for them.
Finally, on screen! https://t.co/C8QH2xrJiE

Conroy, better known as the voice of various animated and computer game Batman incarnations for over 25 years, is widely acknowledged by fans as being the greatest Batman actor of them all – even if it’s only been his voice that’s ever appeared on screen before. However, Crisis on Infinite Earths is going to change that, as it appears that he’ll be playing an older version of Bruce Wayne similar to the version from the animated series Batman Beyond, or the legendary Kingdom Come comic series. While many would prefer the former, the latter would allow make more sense given Brandon Routh’s returning Superman.
The inclusion of Conroy has now led some to speculate on what else the major crossover may have in store for them. Some have suggested that Mark Hamill, who featured as The Trickster in both the current and 1990s series of The Flash, as well as having voiced the Joker alongside Conroy’s Batman for decades, would be an ideal addition. However, the most common recurring thought stems back to something teased during the last crossover series: what about the Smallville TV show, and Clark Kent actor Tom Welling?
Rumours have been swirling of the addition of Tom Welling to the cast, although it would be unlikely that he would don the Superman costume properly – much like his time on Smallville in which he never officially appeared in costume.
However, as much as fans may want to see him, a more likely option may be the inclusion of Smallville’s own Green Arrow, played by Justin Hartley. The former Green Arrow actor has stated before that he’s open to the concept of appearing on Arrow under the right circumstances, and it would be another example of legacy casting, similar to ‘90s Flash John Wesley Shipp appearing in the current Flash show. Hartley’s Green Arrow appearance could also be a way around the teased “future” headline in the shows of Green Arrow going missing in the Crisis.
Crisis on Infinite Earths, which is set to be based on DC’s first major comic book event that ran between 1985 and 1986, featured overlapping characters from DC’s multiverse teaming up as their worlds were destroyed. Ultimately, this resulted in a streamlined continuity which allowed former Charlton characters like Blue Beetle and The Question, along with the former Fawcett Comics Shazam!/Captain Marvel and DC’s Justice Society to exist on one Earth, alongside rebooted main DC characters like Superman and Batman.
This TV crossover is expected to have a similar approach, with various old DC shows and films featuring as the CW/DC shows’ multiverse and, hopefully, it lives up to the hype. As the original Crisis used once advertised, worlds will live and worlds will die… and nothing will ever be the same again.
