A while back I was fortunate enough to review the Iron Man Hero Vision AR Mask from Hasbro. It was a fun experience as I battled the forces of Thanos in my own living room. Fast forward a few months later and, with the release of the stand-alone Bumblebee movie looming, Hasbro has released yet another augmented reality mask, this time based on that awesome yellow robot called the Bumblebee Bee Vision AR Mask.
What is this new-fangled toy from Hasbro? Basically, the Bumblebee Bee Vision AR Mask is the most fun you can have without running around your home in a cardboard suit shouting “take that Decepticons”. Let’s face it, we’ve all challenged imaginary Decepticons firing a barrage of imaginary missiles at them with an imaginary Optimus Prime at our sides. Now, with the future upon us, Hasbro has been able to make you feel even more like your favourite Transformer (we all know its Bumblebee), thanks to a plastic mask, some technological magic and your mobile device.
The Bumblebee Bee Vision mask consists of four main parts that all work together in harmony in order to let you feel like you are Bumblebee.
First off, there is the actual mask, which, unlike the Iron Man Hero Vision Mask, has loads of little details and embellishments on it, including two little adjustable plastic antennae. Don’t get me wrong, the Iron Man mask does look the part but I appreciate the fact that Hasbro went the extra mile to make the Bumblebee mask look as much like the character we know and love as possible. The fact that you can wear the mask without the mobile housing and still imagine fighting alongside Optimus Prime in your living room is an added bonus, heck it would even make a great cosplaying mask with a few minor modifications.
Obviously, it’s not all about looking the part but actually being comfortable as well. Luckily, the mask is made of a light-weight (but still rigid and durable) plastic and has a fully adjustable strap at the back, which goes a long way in making sure that the experience is both fun and as comfortable as possible. During my time reviewing the mask, I asked my kids and some of our friends to try on the mask and everyone commented on how cosy the felt. Of course, this means that mom and dad can get in on some of the action when the kids aren’t hogging the toy, which they no doubt will.
Next up is the actual housing in which your mobile device will be slid into. A very important thing to know is that although standard size mobile devices do fit into the housing, larger ones, such as the iPhone Plus models, don’t. So just be aware of whether you have the right size mobile device when you consider buying the Bumblebee Bee Vision AR Mask.
Once your mobile device is slid into the housing, it easily clicks into the mask. The extra padding makes sure that your time spent destroying Decepticons is as comfortable as possible. You are also able to adjust the lenses inside the housing, making sure that everything is nice and clear and, more importantly, in focus.
When you view your hand through your mobile device, it will actually appear as Bumblebee’s arm cannon.
Then there is the little plastic gauntlet, which you will be wearing on your hand while playing. Again, the gauntlet fits most children and adult hands. When you view your hand through your mobile device, it will actually appear as Bumblebee’s arm cannon. It’s another nice feature that makes you feel like you are actually the lovable gun-totting Transformer.
How will I be blasting Decepticons to bits you might ask? By focusing your view on the various enemies you will automatically lock onto them and by lifting your hand into view you will fire off your weapons. Naturally, you will also be taking quite a bit damage as those Decepticons are packing some heat. Luckily, you can defend and repair yourself by holding your palm up to your mask.
Lastly, there are the AR (Augmented Reality) markers. These round markers are used to define your play area (although you can play without them). During each level, these markers will represent points you have to protect from the oncoming waves of enemies. What is great about these markers is that you can place them as close or as far apart as you’d like, meaning that you’ll be able to play in large or smaller areas.
As for the actual game, basically, it boils down to downloading the Bee Vision app on your mobile device and then following the instructions. Kudos to Hasbro for making it as quick and easy as possible to get playing. The app will also allow you to upgrade your armour and weapons to help you in your fight against the Decepticons. During gameplay, you’ll be facing off against enemies in 10 levels, until you finally come face to face with Megatron.
I have to say that while the AR game is obviously very similar to the Iron Man Hero Vision AR game, it’s still just as much fun though. You truly feel like Bumblebee while playing with the Bumblebee Bee Vision AR Mask.
I’m glad to see Hasbro sticking to their guns and focusing on Augmented Reality…
I’m glad to see Hasbro sticking to their guns and focusing on Augmented Reality as one of their technologies of choice. The fact that kids (and clumsy adults) are still aware of their surroundings while using the mask, and won’t bump into objects or not hear mom or dad when they call them for dinner, makes this a safe way for kids and adults to experience being a Transformer.
Overall, Hasbro’s Bumblebee Bee Vision AR Mask is a great addition to Hasbro’s range of AR toys. With the festive season just around the corner, this might be the perfect toy for that special little (and big) Transformer fan in your life.
