Back in January, 20th Century Fox revealed that their video game division is working on a new game based on the Alien franchise.
It was also revealed that San Francisco based developer Cold Iron Studios is working on it. The studio consists of people who have previously worked on many great games, including Borderlands, Doom and Metroid Prime 3.
Not much was revealed, however, besides the fact that the game would be a shooter, that it was currently in early development and that it will deliver an “action-packed gaming experience”. Now, thanks to a new trademark filing, we now possibly know what the game could be called.
Fox has filed a trademark application for Alien: Blackout. While this trademark filing doesn’t necessarily mean that this is the new game’s title, seeing as Fox might just be acquiring it for future use, it does make sense that this could be the name of the new game.
There has also been rumour suggesting that the game could form part of the many new game announcements expected during the 2018 Game Awards, which take place on the 6th of December.
The last game based on the franchise, Alien: Isolation, was, in the words of many, one of the best Alien games to be released to date. It was expected that, due to the game’s success, developer Creative Assembly would jump on the opportunity to do a sequel. Although this has not happened yet.
Personally, I think a new shooter based on the Alien franchise would be great, as long as it doesn’t follow in the footsteps of the disaster that was Aliens: Colonial Marines, which still haunts my dreams.
