Ever since the glacier white PlayStation 5 was revealed, gamers have been hoping for an announcement of an alternate black version of the next-gen console. Thankfully, the SUP3R5 team paid attention and, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of the iconic PlayStation 2, which sold a whopping 155 million units worldwide, have decided to offer custom black retro PS2-themed PS5 (PlayStation 5) consoles.

Arriving January 8 via their online store, the marked-up limited-edition gaming console, which comes with a matching custom black PS2-themed PS5 DualSense controller, retails for $749.00 (compared to $499 retail) for the disk version (with an Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Drive) and $649 (compared to $399 retail) for the digital verison.
Unfortunately, considering that production is limited to just 304 units, it seems highly unlikely that you’ll get your hands on one of these — unless you have superhuman speed and manage to order directly from SUP3R5 online.
Thankfully, the PS2-themed PS5 consoles ship internationally (including South Africa) — but, as expected, you will have to pay more for shipping if you live outside of the US.
When you consider that there isn’t any stock of the regular PlayStation 5 in South Africa currently, this seems like a good buy. Truth be told, you probably have the same odds at grabbing one of these as you do of purchasing one from your local store. It’s sold out just about everywhere.
It is also important to note that because SUP3R5 isn’t officially affiliated with Sony, the standard hardware warranty provided for the custom PS2-themed PlayStation 5 controller is void – although the console will still be covered. As mentioned on the site, this is because the controllers were completely disassembled and reassembled during the customising process. Of course, this isn’t the case with the console itself – as only the side plates were altered.
