Naughty Dog Studios used yesterday’s PlayStation State of Play event to announce the release date of The Last of Us Part II, the highly anticipated and long-awaited post-apocalyptic zombie sequel to one Playstation’s biggest exclusive hits. Mark your calendars. February 21, 2020 will see Ellie and Joel back in another adventure.
The three-minute-long trailer above provides a better look at the game, particularly the scenes on horseback and in a boat. It also gives us a look at the new threats, both monsters and humans. Even Joel makes a brief but important appearance. However, it’s Ellie’s murderous rampage that takes centre stage. The video gives us some context for the driving force behind her revenge.
The original game launched on the PS3 in 2013 and its sequel will launch on the PS4, which goes against rumours that Sony was holding it back for the PS5. Known for its surprisingly touching story, due to its powerful themes on fatherhood and family, The Last of Us was brutal, violent and incredibly moving.
According to creative director Neil Druckmann, the sequel is designed to explore deeper questions. “With society broken down, how far would you go for justice?” Druckmann asked in an interview with The Verge in 2018. “How much would it consume you? How much would it take away from your humanity? How much would it destroy your relationships? Those are all interesting questions for us to explore.”
Expect a highly emotional story with complex themes come February 21st. Personally, we can’t wait for The Last of Us Part II.
