Nu Metro’s groundbreaking 4DX theatre-format celebrated its 2nd Anniversary in South Africa with the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Friday, 15 December 2017.
It’s been two years since Nu Metro opened Africa’s first ever 4DX theatre at Nu Metro V&A Waterfront with the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. South Africa now boasts six 4DX cinemas nationwide. It is now considered as a respected format, which significantly enhances the cinema experience and literally makes moviegoers a part of the Big Screen-action.
The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson seemed taken aback by just how popular the format is and expressed his interest in knowing more about the format.
What is 4DX?
4DX features full-length movies in live action – a groundbreaking cinematic experience that stimulates the senses using high-tech motion seats and special environmental effects including wind, fog, lightning, water, scents and lots more. These effects are synced perfectly with the action on-screen to create the most exhilarating, unmatched cinema outing.
With 4DX at Nu Metro, cinemagoers can feel the wind in their hair, they can feel sprays of water or blasts of air during sudden, unexpected action scenes; and they can smell the scent of the scenes on-screen – and be taken on an inter-galactic journey like no other.
Movies are now no longer bound by their visual and aural limits. 4DX is the next step in the movie-going evolution, taking audiences on a journey into the full feature film. Soar through the galaxy from the comfort of your seat. 4DX employs carefully timed vibrations paired with the ultimate in motion sensors to deliver a seamless experience of voyaging through space!
A big distinguishing factor between 4DX and D-Box is that 4DX includes environmental effects in a specialised theatre, along with highly sophisticated/high-tech motion seats that have very smooth, realistic movement effects (including floating or flying simulations) – movement and effects are coded by the 4DX technicians in sync with the film studios.
Celebrities from the around the world are all writing about the 4DX experience on Twitter:
I just saw THE LAST JEDI in a 4DX theatre. 3D; moving, rumbling, bucking seats; smoke, rain, mist, snow in the theatre. Like watching STAR WARS while riding STAR TOURS. InSANE!
