“Nants ingonyama bagithi Baba!” Rebooting or remaking a film as popular as The Lion King was always going to be tricky, even in the hands of Disney. And even though the first trailer shows that the film is basically a scene-for-scene recreation of the classic 1994 animated adventure, seeing a real-life Simba, Rafiki and Mufasa does feel a little strange.
Directed by Jon Favreau, who also handled 2013’s The Jungle Book (which was a massive hit), it’s hard to argue that the CGI-animated retelling isn’t beautiful. The recreation of the opening scene from the original, with “Circle of Life” playing in the background, is a sight to behold. All the animals look incredibly realistic and the sunlit backdrops are breathtaking.
The original animated The Lion King was a smashing success, raking in $766 million worldwide at the box office to become the highest-grossing animated feature of all time. And even though you’ll probably end the trailer wondering why this film is really necessary, you can’t help but get nostalgic as James Earl Jones narrates the words of Mufasa again.
Plus, the film has managed to draw a stellar cast that includes Donald Glover, Beyonce, John Oliver, Alfre Woodard, Seth Rogen, and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
