The Evil Within is the latest game from Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami. With someone like that attached to a project you know it’s going to be horror all of the way.
Okay, so I’ve purposefully decided not to read up on The Evil Within or purchased the game yet. One, I’m a bit of a cheapskate, and two I like surprises in my horror. I did, however, decided to pick up the comic for whatever reason. Well it’s actually because I’m a sucker for tie-in media, even for titles that I have yet to experience.
The protagonist, Dana, is driving home from college when her car runs out of the gas and in the middle of the woods. Oh and there’s no cell phone reception and it’s raining. Yes, it’s that clichéd. She makes her way down the road where she comes across a deserted gas station and diner. She sees a figure, follows it and they’re soon chased by zombies or the likes and into an abandoned sanatorium.
The first issue doesn’t give much away. In fact there’s not much to it, but at least the artwork is decent enough. The story reminds me of Silent Hill meets Resident Evil, but their video game incarnations. The comic versions of those two titles are a whole ‘nother story.
The first issue feels a bit cheap and I hope the second issue picks up. Here’s hoping The Evil Within has more substance within.
