You’ll need a little extra in your wallet in 2019 as the prices of movie tickets are on the rise, again. A new article from MyBroadband points out that Ster-Kinekor has, in fact, increased their ticket pricing by 20% (in certain areas) since last year. Ouch.
It seems that going to the movies has become a bit of a luxury as most South Africans are battling to keep up with the ongoing increase in ticket prices and, of course, the confectioneries that go along with it.
On average, a cinemagoer will need to fork out R107 for a 3D movie, or R85 for a 2D movie. This effectively makes a Ster-Kinekor ticket slightly more expensive than a Nu Metro ticket.
As cinemagoers know, there are also more expensive VIP viewing options available, like Prestige, IMAX, SceneXtreme and Scene VIP.
Of course, like every other business in the country, we can expect annual price increases. Also, both cinema chains offer discounted loyalty programs that bring down these prices significantly.
That said, with companies like Netflix, which offer Hollywood standard releases, on the rise, it seems most people might find the most affordable entertainment in the comfort of their home.
With CineCentre opening a number of new cinema chains across the country, it will be interesting to see if the competition will bring down costs and a more competitive spirit between the three companies.
