Drive-in movie theatres used to be a retro way to watch a movie. But thanks to Covid-19 the starry skied, nostalgic throwback has become a necessity. It’s also the perfect solution to our entertainment woes, as a lot of movie-goers are still hesitant about going back to cinemas. While drive-ins haven’t been too popular in South Africa in recent years, all that is about to change with Ster-Kinekor’s drive-in.
Ster-Kinekor is launching a brand new drive-in experience at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront starting on November 27th, with the screening of Nicolas Cage’s latest film, Jiu Jitsu.
The Ster-Kinekor drive-in cinema features a state-of-the-art LED outdoor movie screen, which offers viewers the best picture resolution for day and night screenings. All you have to do is use your car radio to tune into the film’s FM frequency and you’re good to go.
Tickets will be priced at a flat rate of R250 per car for new releases, and R220 per car for older films. This is limited to private passenger vehicles only and one passenger per seat.
For an additional R100, you can have popcorn and sodas ready for collection at the venue. These snacks, packaged in sealed bags for health and safety purposes, can be pre-purchased online with your ticket.
The first screening takes place on Friday, November 27th at 19:00. Additional screenings are scheduled on Saturdays at 15:00 and 19:00, Sundays at 14:00 and 18:00, as well as Thursdays and Fridays at 19:00 throughout the festive season.
As far as viewing options go Ster-Kinekor has something for everyone, from kids and family films like Scoob and 100% Wolf to Avengers: Infinity War.
