After months of speculation, Sony has finally revealed when the PlayStation 5 will be releasing, and, as many have guessed, it’s just a year away.
Sony has officially confirmed that their next console will be called the PlayStation 5 and that it will be releasing in 2020. In a recent post on the Playstation Blog, President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan confirmed that Sony’s next console will be releasing next year and even discussed some of the console’s new features.
Both features hint at a brand new updated DualShock controller that will give players feedback, unlike they’ve experienced with other Playstation controllers. “One of the key goals for Sony has been to “rethink” the DualShock”.
The first of these innovations is the introduction of haptic technology that replaces the rumble found in current controllers. Basically this will ensure that the new controllers are able to give players a broader range of feedback when playing. “With haptics, you truly feel a broader range of feedback, so crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field,” Ryan continues. “You can even get a sense for a variety of textures when running through fields of grass or plodding through mud.”
The second innovation sees Sony updating the controller’s triggers allowing developers to program their resistance. This, combined with the new haptics, will give players more realistic feedback than ever before. “Developers can program the resistance of the triggers so that you feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain.”
“In combination with the haptics, this can produce a powerful experience that better simulates various actions. Game creators have started to receive early versions of the new controller, and we can’t wait to see where their imagination goes with these new features at their disposal.”
As a side-note, Ryan also mentions that developer Sucker Punch’s highly anticipated Ghosts of Tsushima game will be releasing on the Playstation 4, even though many thought it would be a Playstation 5 launch title. We are still betting on the game receiving some sort of upgrade for the PlayStation 5, similar to how last gen’s games also released.
We can’t wait for Sony to reveal more about their next console but so far it seems they are working hard to make the PlayStation 5 the best console out there. Now we just have to wait for Microsoft to reveal more about their next console.
