It’s official. Paramount Pictures and SEGA have confirmed that Sonic the Hedgehog 2, a sequel to their 2020 hit film, is in the early stages of development.
Sonic the Hedgehog is a bit of an anomaly. After a rough start, including delays and a redesign of the character after fan complaints, the film went on to receive rave reviews from audiences and critics.
Somehow the studio managed to turn the project around and score 300 million dollars at the box office, even though the theatrical run was cut short. Of course, this projected the Sonic character back into the mainstream again, after a number of failed and poorly reviewed games.
Sonic the Hedgehog also broke the video-game-to-film-adaptation curse by delivering a fun adventure film that pleased both older and younger fans of the Sega mascot.

The studio is pushing forward, with director Jeff Fowler and his team returning for a sequel.
Jim Carrey already expressed his interest in returning to the franchise mentioning that he was excited to see Doctor Robotnik develop into the classic villain from the games. It seems like he will get a chance to do so.
