Ster-Kinekor Joins Forces With D-Box To Bring Motion Cinema To Viewers

Nu Metro announced their partnership with 4DX almost two years ago in South Africa and screened their first public screenings in January 2016. Until this past week, they had no competitor in the ‘immersive cinema’ space. Ster-Kinekor this week announced their partnership with D-Box to bring the “hyper-realistic immersive entertainment” experience to South Africa’s SK theatres.

Ster-Kinekor announced that their partnership with D-Box will bring the immersive motion cinema seating to four theatres across the country, starting with Johannesburg (at The Zone Rosebank and Mall of Africa), Cape Town (at Cavendish Square), as well as Durban (Gateway Shopping Mall). The introduction of the new seating will take your experience to the next level that will boost and elevate your viewing experience. The D-Box fitted theatres will include 50 seats, which will feature among regular seating, in an attempt to cater for the growing number of moviegoers who are looking for cutting-edge, premium entertainment experiences.

The D-Box system will be installed in already existing theatres, which may also include the IMAX at Mall of Africa and Gateway. The first equipped auditorium to open will be at Mall of Africa just in time for the release of Justice League in the coming weeks (23 November 2017). Other films set to feature the technology include Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which is set to be released on Thursday, 14th December 2017 at 8pm – although only officially to the public on 15th December.

While the motion seats will add to the experience of your standard movie, it remains to be seen how integrated it will be with the regular Ster-Kinekor seating, and how awkward it may be for other viewings at the same cinema not also enjoying the full experience at the same time. I look forward to the experience.
