Showmax’s latest true-crime documentary is being called the most disturbing Showmax Original to date. It isn’t for the faint of heart. Telling the true story of a serial killer who terrorised the streets of Port Elizabeth (Qqeberha) in the early ’90s, detailing not only what he did but also how he became the monster that he did, Boetie Boer: Inside The Mind Of A Monster is terrifying.

Boetie Boer: Inside The Mind Of A Monster tells the story of Stewart Wilkins, a man who was known as Boetie Boer in the communities that he frequented. Director Jasyn Howes was attracted to telling the story of this man after he started independent research more than seven years ago, having always been interested in entering the genre of serial killers.
The terrifying show stars actors who reenact the accounts provided by persons actually involved in the case at the time such as Cherie Kruger – Child Protection Unit SAPS; Derrick Nosworthy – SAPS Murder & Robbery Unit; Gérard Labuschagne – Investigative Forensic Psychologist; Sidney Stander – South African Police Services Narcotics Unit; and Ursula Barnard – Child Protection Unit SAPS, all of which are brought to life by stellar actors.

The actors bringing these investigators to life include Alice Viskat, Grant Ross, Jaco Nothnagel, Christie Van Niekerk, and Raven Swart, doing an immaculate job of stepping into the terrifying and nuanced role of Stewart Wilkins himself, entering the mind of a killer, and portraying him correctly.
For a country that is as tumultuous as South Africa – with its past of segregation and Apartheid – and, as director Jasyn Howes put it, is second in the world for the number of serial killers per capita in the 90s, Boetie Boer: Inside The Mind Of A Monster tells of a story that very much went under the radar. The ’90s was a difficult time for South Africa, with sanctions affecting the country and preventing international investment, exports, imports and the like, feeding even more into how this tale went untold at the time.

While the story isn’t well known, it is no less spine-chilling. Reenactments and first-hand accounts create a sense of dread in the viewer, drawing us in. This helps you understand the crimes that were committed and the many factors that turned someone like Boetie Boer into a monster.
