In recent months, we’ve covered the unfolding landscape that is the foldable smartphone. Most of the coverage has been driven by Samsung’s recent push to be the first OEM to commercially manufacturer the elusive smartphone, which has been touted and teased for half a decade already. The assumed reason for the ramp-up in coverage from Samsung is seemingly to drive a spike in interest for the brand over competitors such as Apple and Huawei, to which it has lost some market share to in recent times. Just this week we covered news that Samsung would be unveiling their foldable design, having teased the Samsung Galaxy Flex by means of a simple change in their Facebook logo. Well, that day is today.
At Samsung Developer Conference 2018, San Francisco, the company showcased their long-awaited foldable smartphone. This last week has seen more discussion around Bixby and Android Pie leading up to the event, but the show was stolen by the smartphone-turned-tablet device, which was showed off by Justin Denison, Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Marketing.
The new Galaxy Flex smartphone is fitted with the Infinity Flex Display, which folds out to tablet size, and then folds away to the size of a smartphone. The device actually sports two screens, one smartphone-sized screen on the outside when the device is folded, and another 7.3″ tablet-sized display on the inside. The idea is that users will be carrying a tablet device in the confines of their pockets going forward. The new device will support multi-window applications, for which users can open up to three apps at any given time.
What’s interesting is that Google already has support built natively into Android Pie to support the folding craze, which will no doubt be played out over the next 12 months. The developers are already working on additional updates to support more features from the OS side.
Although the device is still in its prototyping phase, Samsung couldn’t wait any longer to reveal what it has been working on, as many other leading OEMs have signalled their intention to launch soon. The Samsung Galaxy Flex is said to be introduced to the market in early 2019, with mass production said to be starting soon.
