At an event held at the Daytona Showroom in Melrose Arch, Johannesburg, Samsung hosted a select group of media and guests to launch their latest lineup of Samsung 8K and 4K QLED TVs. The TVs are powered by Samsung’s new proprietary Quantum Processor with various size options to choose from. The 8K TVs provide great picture quality enhancements over the previous generation variants, with bold colours and crystal clear imagery. The range also features a new design, making it an almost complete package.
The event was also meant to launch the Samsung’s latest smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, in the country ahead of being publicly available in June, but due to the recent series of less than impressive reviews in the US, Samsung has decided to postpone the launch in order to improve the product. You can view the full statement below.
The 8K range features three models in the Q70, Q80 and Q90, each of which offers Direct Full Array technology to provide concentrated zones for precision-controlled LED lighting, adjusting automatically to display the deepest blacks and brighter whites for the perfect contrast. In addition to this, the Q80 and Q90 models feature Samsung’s Ultra Viewing Angle technology, which restructures the TV’s panels to allow the backlight to pass through evenly onto the screen. This benefit of this is that the panel has also been engineered to reduce glare and enhance colour. In addition to native 8K playback, the Quantum Processor 8K uses AI to upscale lower resolution content by converting scenes frame by frame to offer the best viewing reproduction with HDR 10+ support. AI features will also extend to Bixby to seamlessly switch between your smartphone and TV, while also being able to receive instruction in multiple languages.
The latest range of QLED TVs will also enhance the user experience by means of the latest apps and ecosystems. Samsung will offer iTunes Movies and TV Shows app as well as AirPlay 2 support, which will soon launch in 190 countries worldwide. The company will also announce a firmware update for TVs released in 2018.
Samsung will take the user experience to the next level by offering iTunes Movies and TV Shows and Apple AirPlay 2 support on 2019 Samsung Smart TV models. Support on 2018 Samsung Smart TVs will be made available via a firmware update. In an industry first, a new iTunes Movies and TV Shows app will debut on Samsung Smart TVs in more than 100 countries. AirPlay 2 support will be available soon on Samsung Smart TVs in 190 countries worldwide.
Samsung’s new QLED range will be available in sizes ranging from 55″ all the way up to 98″, providing the perfect size option to meet your lifestyle and home requirements. The range will go on sale in early May, with preorders between 24 April and 5 May 2019. The QLED TVs will also be available at a large number of retailers across the country, which also includes Samsung Signature Service, complete with delivery and installation. The lineup of 64K QLED TVs will have pricing starting from R19,999, while the 8K range will start at R75,999.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Official Statement
“We recently unveiled a completely new mobile category: a smartphone using multiple new technologies and materials to create a display that is flexible enough to fold. We are encouraged by the excitement around the Galaxy Fold. While many reviewers shared with us the vast potential they see, some also showed us how the device needs further improvements that could ensure the best possible user experience.
To fully evaluate this feedback and run further internal tests, we have decided to delay the release of the Galaxy Fold. We plan to announce the release date in the coming weeks. Initial findings from the inspection of reported issues on the display showed that they could be associated with impact on the top and bottom exposed areas of the hinge. There was also an instance where substances found inside the device affected the display performance.
We will take measures to strengthen the display protection. We will also enhance the guidance on care and use of the display including the protective layer so that our customers get the most out of their Galaxy Fold. We value the trust our customers place in us and they are always our top priority. Samsung is committed to working closely with customers and partners to move the industry forward. We want to thank them for their patience and understanding.”
