The first trailer for Ryan Reynolds’ upcoming Action/Sci-Fi comedy, Free Guy, is inspired by popular videogames, mainly Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite. Directed by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum), it actually looks like a lot of fun.
It must be great being Ryan Reynolds right now. Every film he makes seems to revolve around him having fun and mostly just being himself. We can see that in Deadpool, The Hitman’s Bodyguard and the recent Hobbs & Shaw film. The guy is just having a blast.
In Free Guy we get more of the same. Ryan Reynolds being Ryan Reynolds.
At first glance, this might appear like an R-rated version of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. And that might be one way to look at it (especially since it’s written by the same guy, Zak Penn). The film is mostly set in a virtual world populated with avatars controlled by players.
Gamers, however, will quickly spot the references to Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite. Just look at all the chaos.
A bank teller discovers that he’s actually an NPC inside a brutal, open-world video game.
The film also stars Taika Waititi and Jodie Comer.
