At this weekend’s D23 event, Disney shared footage from Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker that included a shot of Rey in red robes unveiling a new lightsaber. If you look closely, you’ll see that it is hinged in the middle and is able to extend into a Maul-like double lightsaber. Has our protagonist turned evil? Maybe.
JJ Abram’s Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker looks to be ending the nine-film Skywalker saga with more epic Jedi battles. A voiceover from Luke declares that there have been “a thousand generations, but this is your fight.” If you look and listen carefully, you’ll spot some amazing new easter eggs and footage from the upcoming finale, including Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren engaged in a lightsaber fight on floating debris in a rising tide. Darth Vader’s breathing is also heard during the footage. Will he return?
Regardless, Rey in a hood with the double-ended red lightsaber which unfolds from two pieces is a highlight for most fans.
Let the rumours and speculation begin.
