Even after being in the business for over a decade, there are instances of experiencing new things while finding hidden gems you never knew would change how your daily patterns or routines change. I reviewed the DJI OSMO gimbal a few years ago and have never been without one since. Then, there’s the addition of the EcoFlow Delta 2. However, this was more necessity than convenience. Now, for the first time, I’m reviewing a desk. This isn’t just any desk, though. It’s a standing desk. To be more specific, the Vari Electric Standing Desk.
Like your gaming chair (or similar), the desk is integral to your workstation and gaming layout. That said, it’s not often that we think about it too much. Once you’ve made your purchase, it’ll be years before it’s replaced, even if it doesn’t fulfil all your requirements. The Vari Electric Standing Desk offers various options, making it versatile and robust. But is it worth upgrading your current setup?

Vari Standing Desk Build and Design
In terms of the overall design, the Vari desk is very minimalist. Even with add-ons, compared to conventional desks, it doesn’t look all that complex in its setup. There are just three primary sections to its build, which also makes it reasonably easy to assemble.
These three sections comprise the legs, the tabletop and the controls. The legs are packaged as separate components to the desk and assembled. However, the controls form part of the tabletop and are neatly positioned on the right-hand side, with its cabling tucked away beneath.
There are two size variants for the desk, which I’d label as medium and large. I received the larger table, measuring 60×30″ – or 1525x762mm. The smaller variant measures 48×30″ (1219x762mm). Given my current desk and other cabinets, I had to have the desk outside the study during the review period, as it was too large for my layout. Ensure you have sufficient space when ordering the large option, as it can easily take up a quarter to a third of the room it occupies.
In addition to the size options, there are four different tabletop finishes. Of the four, three have a laminate finish in black, white and dark colours. The final option is reclaimed wood, which has a more natural rustic aesthetic.
Overall, with its minimal aesthetic and easy-to-assemble configuration, it is very robust built with its thick legs, which are as wide as the desk. It creates a stable operating area with near-zero play at the top, creating a comfortable and secure finish.
Vari Standing Desk Specifications and Features
As already mentioned, the desk has dimensions of 1525x762mm. To add to this, it has a height that ranges from 635mm to 1280mm. Its height adjustments are one of the main features of the Vari Electric Standing Desk, as it allows users to switch between heights to work either while sitting or standing.
The suggestion at the start was to constantly switch between sitting and standing before adjusting to the change. Having gone from always sitting to standing is a massive adjustment. Initially, you think it’s easy and not a big problem. However, after five to ten minutes, you’ll quickly become fidgety as you look to get into a more comfortable standing position. Now, switching to your chair to rest your legs and back before standing again would be better. Over time, you’ll grow accustomed to it.
Two hooks are included in the packaging, which can be added to any side of the desk. This can be used to hang your headphones, purse or similar items. It’s simple to use but effective, allowing users to add more as required.

The main objective of the Vari Electric Standing Desk is to assist with injuries and circulation. This is especially true for those who have back issues and cannot sit for long periods at a time or at all. With all its health benefits, having a standing desk is a great option. However, it’s not as easy as it seems to make a straight switch.
Having started with 10-minute intervals, I eventually moved up to about 30 minutes at a time when using the desk. This was across a two-week period, which I’d estimate would take about a month or more to fully acclimatise – depending on how often you’re using it.
With the large desk measuring 1525x762mm, there was plenty of real estate to use. I could easily fit my laptop, monitor, mouse pad and portable storage, taking less than half the capacity. This made it ideal to have other items for quick-to-reach options. What I found even more helpful was utilising the desk for various shots for my regular unboxing vids and having more of the tech items available around me during my testing.
Being guilty of spending hours in front of my screen, whether gaming, writing or editing, I often spend too much time sitting. Sometimes, I make it a point to get up and move around, especially when grabbing water or using the restroom or a coffee break. The standing desk option helps with this, making it easy to continue your work while standing. It also helps subconsciously make more effort to do so, knowing how much easier it is.
With a simple click of a button, selecting from the four programmed options, you can adjust it to your standing or sitting height in seconds without trying to find that sweet spot every time. It works great.
The Vari Electric Standing Desk has a maximum weight capacity of 90KG on paper. This makes it easy to add whatever you require on the desk while also having enough capacity to support my entire body weight over and above. This adds to its robust build quality while explaining how the unit is as stable as it is when used.
A few fail-safes are also built-in, especially considering that loadshedding may be a factor. This lack of power to the desk means you won’t be able to adjust it and, on the odd occasion, can mean that it causes an issue when reconnected. When this happens, there is a simple solution on the controls to reset the desk without losing its memory setting. Additionally, if the unit does lose power, it’ll remain locked in place, which is a great peace of mind. In this case, I would suggest opting for the seating position, as two hours may be too long for most users to stand at any given time.
Is the Vari Standing Desk Worth It?
The Vari Electric Standing Desk may not be the most advanced of options regarding revolutionary tech, but it can significantly impact your daily routine. It has a minimalist approach to its design while still being sleek and elegant in its aesthetic. It has a robust build which doesn’t move under load in use at all, which is impressive. It’s an excellent boost for your conventional work, adding many benefits.
The one major hurdle you need to overcome is the hefty price tag. The large option carries a retail price of R14,900, while the smaller option is available at R12,900. Considering that an average desk ranges from R1,000 to R3,000, adding R10,000 to the price tag isn’t an easy sell. There are plenty of benefits to consider when deciding; however, you must be sure you will make the most of it.
