We’ve had He-Man’s Masters of the Universe Castle Grayskull Playset, based on the mighty Eternia fortress of mystery, for a number of years now. Sadly, Skeletor hasn’t gotten the same kind of love and hasn’t had anywhere to rest his head. Until now. Mattel has finally given Origins toy line fans and collectors a Masters of the Universe Origins Snake Mountain Playset (inspired by the Snake Mountain lair in the Dark Hemisphere of Eternia).

Just like the Grayskull playset before it, the Masters of the Universe Origins Snake Mountain Playset is quite something to behold. In fact, the packaging alone commands attention, thanks to the masterful artwork on the box. Primarily depicting Skeletor and warriors, you could easily display the entire package on a shelf as a work of art. It’s just so eye-catching and so cool.
Opening the large box, you’ll find Snake Mountain in all its grandeur – and the meticulous attention to detail evident in its design. It’s a huge playset and dwarfs the Grayskull castle just a little in terms of size – once it’s assembled, of course. While collectors might concerned with the amount of pieces that need to be put together and assembled, the process isn’t quite as daunting as it might seem – especially since the playset arrives with pre-applied stickers (thank you, Mattel!). Guided by clear instructions, my 6-year-old managed to build the majority of it.

Once you’ve managed to assemble the fortress, you’ll find that one of the most fascinating aspects of the Masters of the Universe Origins Snake Mountain Playset is the snake feature. The snake, despite its limited articulation, adds a menacing presence to the playset, embodying the dangers lurking within Snake Mountain.
Thankfully, the limited movement with the snake is probably the only real negative to this entire playset. Everything else is on par with what we’ve come to expect from the toy line.
Again, in terms of scale, Masters of the Universe Origins Snake Mountain Playset impresses with its whopping 26-inch height (which makes it bigger than the vintage version). This allows enough room for you to hide or place your favourite villains in action positions.
Opened up inside, you’ll find a comprehensive diorama, which is complete with a bridge connecting the two halves – both with a set of engaging features. In one corner, you’ll find a dungeon cage, a functioning trap door and a murky swamp area. In another corner, you’ll find the inclusion of Skeletor’s bone throne and a weapons rack. In fact, everywhere you look you’ll find items or details that evoke the rich lore of the Masters of the Universe saga. For example, the intricate carvings of demon faces, the spinning wolf head, and the purple hues of the rocky terrain fit perfectly and bring the villain’s lair to life.

Overall, the set is sturdy and should last years – even if your kid (or you) plays with it as much as my kid does. Mattel has not compromised on sturdiness or durability. Sure, the plastic is a tad softer than the original vintage version, but if memory serves me correctly, this feels a lot sturdier.
Although it’s made to accommodate 5.5-inch scale MOTU™ Origins figures, we were happily playing with the 7-inch Masters Of The Universe Masterverse toys, too. The Stinkor action figure and the Masterverse New Eternia Whiplash seemed at home here, too. Basically, any He-Man toy can be used alongside the playset.

In conclusion, the Masters of the Universe Origins Snake Mountain playset, which was created as a homage to the ’80s, is a significant addition to the Origins line. It’s a testament to Mattel’s commitment to honouring the legacy of the franchise while infusing it with modern sensibilities.
