Just when you think you’ve seen everything a new handheld video game system comes along and completely catches you off guard. Meet the Playdate.
The new handheld gaming system called Playdate isn’t your traditional handheld. Sure, it is small, portable and looks cute but one feature is completely unique to this little handheld and that is its hand crank.
Yes, you read correctly the Playdate has an actual hand crank feature which can be used to play games, would you so prefer. It’s an intresting feature and one that is sure to get gamers talking.
Along with this unique feature, the striking little handheld also features a bright yellow body and even more surprisingly a black and white screen. The handheld is being made by software developer Panic, who has been developing software for more than two decades.
In terms of actual games, the handheld will get 12 brand new games, with one being released each week. Some of the games will be shorter than others and some more experimental but Panic promises that all of them will be fun and unique.
While the handheld features a hand crank, some games will use the trusty and less gimmicky classic A and B buttons, as well as a D-pad.
Oh yeah, the crank! No, it doesn’t power the device. It’s a flip-out rotational controller that puts a fresh spin on fun. Some games use it exclusively, some use it with the d-pad, and some not at all. pic.twitter.com/XYW97nLZKK

The Playdate is set for release in 2020 and will cost around $150 USD. As an added bonus, all 12 games will be included in the price.
What do you think? Is this just another gimmick or could this little unassuming handheld make an impact in a market that has been stagnating for some time?
