Hugh Hefner, once called the “prophet of pop hedonism” by Time magazine, became a key figure in the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. He was married three times and claimed to have slept with more than 1,000 women during his lifetime. He is survived by his wife Crystal and their four children.
“Hugh M. Hefner, the American icon who in 1953 introduced the world to Playboy magazine and built the company into one of the most recognisable American global brands in history, peacefully passed away today from natural causes at his home, The Playboy Mansion, surrounded by loved ones,” Playboy Enterprises said in a statement.
