This is not clickbait, you read that correctly. The campaign had been in the works for some time in 2018, but when the account went live earlier this year and the official post of the egg in question was posted on 4 January 2019, the record attempt was in full swing. Fast-forward a few weeks and the record has now officially been beaten.
Late Sunday night, the photo of an egg, as seen above, overtook the previous record of 18m views set by Kylie Jenner’s birth announcement in 2017. There’s nothing special at all about the egg, just your average, run-of-the-mill, freckled brown egg.
There’s not a lot to comment about the post itself, but the feat is undeniable as to the cultural significance of today’s social media influence. The internet has always been a strange phenomenon, thanks to the masses and the trends they set. The egg is just the latest to ascend to the top of the social media pack in 2019.
Jenner herself joined in on the fun after Instagram users started trolling her on world record post with emojis of an egg, or simple “Egg Gang” messages. On Sunday afternoon, ahead of the official world record crossing, she posted a video of herself cracking an egg on a pavement with the caption, “Take that little egg.”
The post’s momentum shows no sign of slowing as yet, having passed the 26m mark within the next 12 hours after beating the original world record target. So outrageous is the publicity stunt that the owners of the account have agreed to public demand for official merchandise sometime later this year.
