Over the years, Nike has experimented with various new tech innovations to revolutionise the way we think about sneakers. To rival brands like Crocs and Vans, the sports brand’s latest trainers, the Nike GO FlyEase, are hands-free (lace-free) slip-on sneakers that promise to be comfortable no-fuss footwear.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, brands like Crocs have seen huge momentum in sales as consumers gravitate towards more comfortable shoes while indoors. With this in mind, Nike focused its efforts to create a stress-free and easy new shoe to shake up the market.

Enter the Nike GO FlyEase.

Inspired by Asian culture (where it’s customary to remove shoes before entering a home), the Nike GO FlyEase is made of two sections connected by a hinge that allows users to slide their feet in and out without tying shoelaces. It’s quick, easy and simple.

But the unique design also pushes another focus: cleanliness.

With the Nike GO FlyEase being hands-free, there would be no need to touch the dirty surface bottom of your shoes. And considering that we walk just about anywhere, and the current pandemic, this seems like a clever way to avoid touching both dirt and germs.

“This shoe really responds to our current-day situation living in these Covid times,” Sarah Reinertsen, manager of FlyEase Innovation at Nike, said in an interview. “This is actually an innovation that has been cooking up in our innovation kitchen for a little while … but it just came out right at the right time, when we needed it more than ever.”

It’s also important to note:

  • The Nike GO FlyEase has a bi-stable hinge within the sole.
  • The trainer has a kickstand heel.
  • It is stable both open and when it is closed.
  • The hinge connects both parts of a sole.
  • The Nike GO FlyEase hands-free slip-on sneakers will be available to select Nike members for $120 (around R2000), starting February 15, 2021.
