If you grew up in the ’80s and had a fascination with everything Jim Henson, then you might remember an absolute gem of a movie from the man behind The Muppets called Dark Crystal. Te first trailer for Netflix’s upcoming prequel, Dark Crystal: The Resistance, shows just how true to the original the show will be.
Although it is clear that the effects and visuals for Dark Crystal: The Resistance has been updated for a more modern audience, the puppetry and characters we see in the trailer looks like they were taken straight out of the ’80s film. It’s heartwarming to see the care and attention that has seemingly gone into this prequel, especially after the horrible reboot of the Reboot series Netflix launched a while back.
Dark Crystal will follow a trio of Gelflings who inspire a rebellion against the cruel Emperor. It’s up to these Gelflings to save the planet and stop the villainous Skeksis from spreading a disease which has started to infect everyone and everything.
The original movie is considered by many to not only be a great achievement in storytelling but also in practical visual effects and puppetry. Master of puppets Jim Henson mentioned on multiple occasions how the movie was one of the most difficult things he’s ever done and, looking back at it now, one just realizes how much effort must have gone into bringing his vision to life. It is great to see that the Netflix series seems to be staying true to this vision.
Judging from the trailer, the series is set to have the same dark tone that the original movie had, which should please many fans of the original.
The cast does include some rather big names, including Taron Egerton (Rocketman), Anya Taylor-Joy (Glass) and Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) who will star as the trio of heroic Gelflings, as well as Caitriona Balfe, Helena Bonham Carter, Natalie Dormer, Eddie Izzard, Toby Jones, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mark Strong, Alicia Vikander, Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs, Keegan-Michael Key, Simon Pegg and Andy Samberg.
