Netflix has announced that it is currently developing an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, the collectable trading card game that grew to have twenty million players as of 2015.
Netflix not only revealed that they are developing the Magic: The Gathering animated series but also that the Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, would be working together with Hasbro and the Wizards of The Coast in order to bring the property to the small screen.
The Russo brothers will be in charge of overseeing the creation of an all-new storyline set in the universe, which will expand on the stories involving the Planeswalkers, the property’s magical heroes and villains. It seems the Russo brothers might be the perfect fit. “We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” they revealed.
These Planeswalkers are able to not only wield powerful magic but can also travel to the various planes that form part of the Magic universe. Over the years, these Planeswalkers have become the faces of Magic, with many fans having their own personal favourite.
For those not familiar with Magic: The Gathering, it is basically a 26-year old card game that revolves using various spells and creature in order to defeat your opponent. The game has seen many new editions and iterations being added over the years.
Head of anime programming at Netflix, John Derderian, also commented on how they are fully aware that the beloved property has a very passionate fan base but believe that the Russo brothers are the perfect people for the job. “Magic is a beloved global franchise with a massively engaged fan base that has only continued to grow over the last 25 years. There’s no one better suited to bring this story to audiences around the world than Joe and Anthony Russo, whose talent for genre storytelling is unmatched, as demonstrated by their central role in creating some of the biggest box office hits of all time,” he added.
The Russo brothers have recently been heavily involved with Marvel Studios, working on such films as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War and both of the recent Avengers films (Infinity War and Endgame).
Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina will serve as writers and co-executive producers Wizards of The Coast will be overseeing the story.
No news yet on when to expect the Magic: The Gathering animated series, but let’s hope Netflix reveals more about it soon.
